A greenhouse is an investment, and proper care of your greenhouse plastic can ensure it serves you for years to come. Follow these maintenance tips to keep your greenhouse in top shape.
1. Clean Regularly
Dust, dirt, and algae can accumulate on the plastic, reducing light penetration. Use a soft cloth or sponge with a mild soap solution to clean both sides of the cover. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers that can damage the plastic.
2. Inspect for Damage
Seasonal changes can cause wear and tear on the plastic. Regularly inspect for holes, tears, or loose sections. Patch small damages promptly using repair tape to prevent them from growing larger.
3. Secure the Edges
Strong winds and heavy rains can stress the edges of your plastic. Check that the cover is taut and securely fastened to the frame using clamps or ropes. Reinforce the corners, as they’re prone to pulling away over time.
4. Remove Snow and Debris
In colder climates, snow accumulation can strain and even collapse the plastic. Use a soft broom to gently remove snow. Similarly, clear fallen leaves or branches to avoid damage.
5. Replace When Necessary
Even with proper care, greenhouse plastic has a lifespan. Most high-quality plastics last 4-6 years. Replace when you notice excessive wear or reduced light transmission to ensure your plants remain protected.
